Jacob Sheep

Jacob Sheep are a very ancient domesticated breed. The breed is estimated to go back as much as three thousand years ago originating in what is now Syria. Jacob Sheep were originally introduced to the United States for game parks and zoos.

The Jacob Sheep is a small to medium size breed. Adult ewes range from 80 to 140 pounds, while rams will occasionally attain weights approaching 200 pounds. Jacob Sheep are carriers of the polycerate gene, allowing the animal to produce two, four, or six horns. Rams and ewes both have horns; however, scurs are permitting in ewes being considered for registration.

The fleeces from Jacobs are a delight for handspinners and connoisseurs of natural color. They are light and open, weighing between three and six pounds, and having a staple length of four to seven inches. It parts easily, exposing a soft, medium fine wool. The average micron size ranges from 28 to 32, ranging on the Bradford scale from 48 to 54. Due to the spotting of these animals, the wool can be spun into a complete spectrum from white through gray/lilac to black.

We will also have available fiber for home spinners and some tanned pelts.
