Urine Collection Methods
SO...just how do you collect urine?
It is not necessary to collect the urine sample directly into a container as it is being voided. If you see your mare urinating, urine which has been voided onto the ground can still be collected by placing absorbent material (e.g. a paper towel) onto it, and squeezing the urine out into a clean container for subsequent testing by WeeFoal.
Another very reliable method to collect urine is to attach a collection device to the mare. One such device, invented by breeder Gill Booth from KeriKeri, attaches to the mare's blanket. The device is simple, inexpensive and easy to make, and generally undetected by the mare. A picture of Gill's device is shown below.
Other breeders have devised similar methods, including taping a paper or styrofoam cup directly to the mares under tail area with cloth tape or as one breeder reports duct tape worked well for him!

Suggestion: Placing some absorbent material in the collection container is also useful, as this prevents all the collected urine splashing out when your mare runs up to greet you! Again the urine can be squeezed out of the absorbent material into a clean container for testing.
Another method requires taping a sanitary napkin directly to the mares vulva area and removing when wet, squeeze the necessary amounts into a clean collection container and test away!
One can also use absorbent paper towels or other material to sop up a urine spot and squeeze out the excess urine into a clean container for testing..consider using gloves for these methods :)
Another breeder had great success with putting her mares in a clean stall on light plastic and simply scooping up the amount needed, 1-2cc's, with a spoon and placing in a clean container..remember a wee bit of dirt won't alter the test in any fashion.
Feel free to send us pics of your urine collection method, we'd love to feature them on this site !
